5 Tips To Keep Your Child Safe On Hot Days
Did You Know?
According to the National Safety Council, more than 800 young children have died in overheated cars since 1998. These tragedies are often the result of a forgetful parent or caregiver who accidently leaves a child inside the car, or a child locks themselves inside the car or trunk.
Hard to believe anything except “this will NEVER happen to me.” All it takes is a distracted parent or caregiver, perhaps breaking routine or especially busy to forget there is a small child in the back seat.
Here are the facts
In just a few short minutes, the temperature of a car’s interior can rapidly rise nearly 20 degrees. This rapid rise in temperature is hazardous for a child. According to healthychildren.org, “when left in a hot car, a child’s major organs begin to shut down when his temperature reaches 104 degrees Fahrenheit (F), and a child can die when his temperature reaches 107F.”
5 Tips to keep in mind
Put the diaper bag/or child’s belongings in the front seat as a reminder. Putting your purse or briefcase (heck, even your cell phone!) in the backseat next to your child can also serve as a checkpoint reminder before leaving the car.
Make sure your vehicle is locked to prevent small children from getting inside the car or the trunk. This is especially important at home where your children roam free and explore. Teach your child that the car is not a toy, and keep keys safe and away from their reach.
If someone else drives your child, check in with them. No amount of calling or texting is too much when checking on the safety of your child.
NEVER intentionally leave your child alone in a car, even for a minute.
If a child is locked inside a car, get them out immediately. If they look listless and/or flushed, call 911 immediately for assistance and stay with the child until help arrives.
Always keep your guard up. Even in low temperature weather and shady conditions, children left alone inside a car is hazardous.
